Anwar: ‘Not a zero‑sum game’ as language mastery broadens unity and opportunity

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim emphasized on Aug 29 that efforts to maintain the Malay language, the country's official tongue, should not be viewed as an attempt to diminish the mastery of other languages. He stressed that every Malaysian, irrespective of their racial identity, should possess a strong grasp of the national language, while also fostering proficiency in additional languages, such as English, Mandarin, and Tamil, to expand educational and economic prospects.

Anwar further clarified in his address at the Ambang Merdeka Sahabat Madani 2026 highlight programme at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Permatang Pauh, that English has emerged as a vital global language, and hence, the educational system should incorporate it, rather than replace Malay but rather complement it. He also pointed out that knowledge of Mandarin is gaining significance due to its prominence as one of the key economic languages in the region, and Malaysians are showing interest in enhancing their Tamil proficiency.

Anwar emphasized that "it is not a zero-sum game." He encouraged children to master the Chinese language, as long as their Malay language competence remains robust. He further clarified that learning regional languages does not place us at a disadvantage. Anwar framed this as an economic necessity, stating that securing one's own interests and future is not at the expense of English or American English but rather to provide additional opportunities for personal development.

He cautioned against fostering animosity among races, as the country's harmony should not be taken for granted as an enduring state without consistent efforts to preserve unity. Anwar urged a spirit of sharing, caring, and assisting one another so that every citizen, regardless of race, can reap the benefits of the country's development in an inclusive manner.
