KMTC student drowns while swimming at Chania Falls

A student from Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) in Meru, John Musau Kamau, tragically drowned while swimming at Chania Falls in Nyeri Central Sub-County on August 28, 2026. The incident unfolded during a nature walk with friends along the Chania River. According to police, Kamau ventured into the river to swim, but the strong currents proved too much, resulting in his drowning.

The police were alerted at around 5:05 pm following a report of the tragedy. The victim, who was attached to the Outspan Hospital in Nyeri and studying Engineering at KMTC Meru Campus, had his body recovered, albeit delayed by the dark conditions and challenging environment at the falls. Divers were planned to commence a search and recovery operation the following day, Saturday, August 29.

This incident underscores the risks associated with swimming in rivers and waterfalls, especially during periods of strong water currents. Meanwhile, a separate incident saw a 76-year-old man, Ngoa Ndoro Ngoa, murdered in Mukamenyi village, Buguta Sub-location, Voi, Taita Taveta County. The victim's body was discovered with deep cuts to his head and neck, and though police have commenced investigations, the motive and suspect remain unknown.

The police have emphasized that the case is under active investigation, with further updates to follow as they progress.
