Jayden Maiava, new playmakers lead No. 14 USC to 42-26 win over San Jose State in season opener

Jayden Maiava led Southern California to a 42-26 win over San Jose State in their season opener on Saturday. The 14th-ranked Trojans showcased several promising newcomers in coach Lincoln Riley’s offense. Trent Mosley caught seven passes for 118 yards and a touchdown in his dynamic debut, while Kayden Dixon-Wyatt also caught a touchdown pass in his first game.

Riley Wormley and Shahn Alston rushed for their first touchdowns. New defensive coordinator Gary Patterson’s unit largely performed well, allowing USC to build a 35-3 lead heading into the fourth quarter. However, San Jose State quarterback Luke Weaver rallied his team with three late touchdown drives, tightening the final score.

USC had several high-profile players missing, including defensive tackle Jahkeem Stewart and presumed starting receivers Tanook Hines and Terrell Anderson. Freshman quarterback Jonas Williams, who could potentially replace Maiava next season, played the fourth quarter with 55 passing yards and an interception. San Jose State will face Eastern Michigan on Friday, September 4.
