Japan to Send 3 Helicopters to Help Indonesia Battle Wildfires

Japan plans to send three Ground Self-Defense Force CH-47 transport helicopters to Indonesia to assist in combating forest and land fires, marking the first time Japanese Self-Defense Forces have engaged in overseas firefighting operations. These helicopters will be transported aboard the Maritime Self-Defense Force's Kunisaki, which is expected to depart for Indonesia once the necessary preparations are made.

Approximately 600 Japanese personnel will participate in the international emergency relief mission, as announced by the Japanese Defense Ministry on Friday.

The deployment was initiated following a request for assistance from the Indonesian government, with Japan's Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi directing the Joint Operations Command to carry out the mission. Koizumi emphasized Japan's commitment to helping contain the fires and minimize further damage in a statement to reporters.

The CH-47 helicopters will play a crucial role in firefighting operations, offering heavy-lift aerial capabilities to supplement Indonesia's existing firefighting fleet. Equipped with tanks or buckets, these helicopters can carry and drop substantial amounts of water while also transporting personnel and equipment to challenging terrains.

This deployment is a result of discussions between Japan and Indonesia on potential assistance, following Jakarta's request for support in battling the fires. The mission aligns with a defense cooperation agreement signed in May between the defense ministers of Japan and Indonesia, which aims to promote cooperation in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations.

The deployment also comes in the aftermath of trilateral talks among the defense chiefs of Japan, Australia, and Indonesia, aimed at strengthening defense and security cooperation among the three nations.

Japan's decision to dispatch the Self-Defense Forces to Indonesia signifies an expansion of its overseas disaster-relief activities, with a primary focus on supporting firefighting efforts rather than engaging in military operations. The Kunisaki, carrying the three CH-47 helicopters, is scheduled to leave for Indonesia after completing the requisite preparations.

The approximately 600 personnel involved will join the operation once it commences. Indonesia is currently grappling with a significant escalation in forest and peatland fires, particularly in Kalimantan, prompting authorities to intensify firefighting efforts in West, Central, and South Kalimantan.
