Israeli army says struck Hamas commander in Gaza hospital compound

On Saturday, Israel's military claimed they struck a Hamas commander within the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital compound in Deir al-Balah, central Gaza. The military could not yet confirm if the commander was killed, stating he was hiding within the compound and had attacked IDF troops and Israeli civilians. The hospital's director, Raed Hussein, confirmed four minor injuries were sustained due to the strike, but extensive material damage was also caused.

The military took steps to minimize civilian risk and had warned medical authorities two days prior about using medical facilities for terrorist purposes. International aid group Doctors Without Borders expressed outrage at the airstrike within the hospital, emphasizing the importance of respecting medical facilities' neutrality and protection.

Separate strikes across Gaza on Saturday killed four people, as reported by Gaza's civil defence agency. The Israeli military is investigating the reports. Israel has continued striking Gaza despite a US-backed ceasefire since October 2025, insisting on eliminating Hamas threats. Since the ceasefire, Israeli forces have killed at least 1,313 people and reported five deaths among their own ranks, including one civilian contractor.
