Inquiry ordered as CCTV footage emerges of police's alleged involvement in scuffle in Karachi's DHA

An investigation has been ordered following the emergence of CCTV footage showing alleged police involvement in a scuffle between two apartment residents in Karachi's Defence Housing Authority (DHA) Phase 6. According to the CCTV footage, a woman was seen rushing down a flight of stairs with a dumbbell in her hand, charging at another woman and then hitting her with it.

Two individuals in what appeared to be police uniforms were restraining the woman being assaulted, while another man joined them and began arguing with her.

The woman managing to enter their home after the altercation was followed by the woman with the dumbbell and another man yelling obscenities and banging on their door. At the end of the footage, a man in a shalwar kameez smashed the CCTV camera using a weapon provided by one of the uniformed individuals.

After the video surfaced online, South Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Syed Asad Raza directed an investigation officer to conduct a probe in an impartial manner. Both sides had accused each other of the incident. A first information report (FIR) was registered at Darakhshan police station at 1:40am on August 21 on the complaint of a woman.

The FIR alleged that the woman was assaulted by a man, his sister, and their mother who resided on the third floor over a parking issue. The woman also claimed that her gold earrings and two rings were stolen during the incident. However, DIG Raza removed section 382 from the FIR, as the incident appeared to be a case of assault rather than theft.
