Go Woo-suk designated for assignment by Minnesota Twins

Seoul, August 29 (Yonhap) -- The Minnesota Twins have placed South Korean pitcher Go Woo-suk on assignment, further complicating his efforts to establish himself in Major League Baseball (MLB). Go joined the Twins' Triple-A affiliate, the St. Paul Saints, in late July following a brief appearance in MLB. Players facing assignment can be traded or placed on irrevocable waivers within a week.

If waivers pass without a team claiming the player, they may be sent to the minors or released, turning them into a free agent. As the trade deadline has passed, Go now awaits to see if any team will take him off waivers. Go made his highly anticipated MLB debut with the Twins on July 9, just over two years after signing with the San Diego Padres.

However, he appeared in only four games and pitched four innings, allowing four earned runs on eight hits, including two home runs. He was subsequently sent down to Triple-A after surrendering three runs on four hits in a single inning on July 20. Go was ejected from his first game with the Saints for having an illegal substance in his glove and was initially suspended for 10 games, which was later reduced to eight games on appeal.

In eight appearances for the Saints, Go went 2-1 but surrendered 13 earned runs on nine hits in 9 1/3 innings, resulting in a 12.54 ERA. He also issued 11 walks, hit a batter, and threw three wild pitches. Born in 1996, the 28-year-old Go signed with the San Diego Padres in January 2024 after a strong season as an All-Star closer in the Korea Baseball Organization.

Despite the Padres' investment, Go never made it to MLB with them and was traded to the Miami Marlins in May 2024. However, he was released by the Marlins' Triple-A team, the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, in June 2025. Go then signed with the Detroit Tigers on a minor league deal the following month and played the remainder of his 2025 season in their minor leagues before being traded to the Twins in exchange for cash. The right-hander now faces an uncertain future after this latest setback.
