Fruitcake, files and frozen relations: A Chatsworth neighbourly dispute

When the reporter arrived at Uncle Marnie's home in Chatsworth, he was greeted by a chronic grumbler. Uncle Marnie, sitting on a worn wicker chair, complained about a neighbour, Pather, who left dirt by the reporter's light pole every morning. A dainty imbuia tea stand, full of lever-arch files, greeted the reporter as he was served a plate of fruitcake.

The reporter listened as Uncle Marnie vented about writing to various departments, including the councillor, president, and even the Divine Life Society. He mentioned that Pather had not received any response. The tea and cake were served by a kindly woman who resembled Mrs Marnie. Uncle Marnie's tone softened as he spoke about the work of the Human Settlements department, which he believed was to build houses, not mediate neighbour disputes.

The reporter suggested they sit down and discuss the matter, but Pather was resistant. Uncle Marnie, however, was open to a conversation. The reporter noticed that Pather's garden was well-maintained, which prompted Uncle Marnie to ask if they could talk to Pather to make sure his yard was swept. Pather seemed to soften further, but the reporter was told that he was not one for arguments. The reporter left with the hope of doing an in loco inspection and speaking with Pather privately.
