Fix Tema Port, roads to cut logistics costs and boost trade — Oro Oil CEO, Maxwell Commey

Oro Oil Ghana Limited Chief Executive Officer, Maxwell Commey, has urged immediate and coordinated efforts to resolve congestion, high logistics costs, and inadequate inland connectivity affecting Ghana’s ports, particularly the Tema Port. He highlighted that these issues were stifling trade, increasing business expenses, and hindering job creation.

In a statement on August 29, Commey suggested that Ghana could enhance its logistics system's efficiency through targeted infrastructure improvements, digitalization, private-sector involvement, and better coordination among agencies handling trade. He emphasized that congested roads near port areas led to delays, yard congestion, and higher expenses for businesses and consumers due to factors like container backlogs and poor maintenance of access roads.

Commey urged the government to prioritize port access roads as a vital part of Ghana’s logistics infrastructure, focusing on rehabilitating and upgrading roads leading to the Tema Harbour area. He also advocated for aligning infrastructure investments with Ghana’s export and industrialization goals, stating that reliable and affordable logistics would benefit exporters and support job creation in logistics, trucking, cargo handling, and related sectors.

Commey called for the integration of roads, rail, and dry-port links in comprehensive corridor projects, with clear maintenance plans and public-private partnerships. He also advocated for the use of digital systems and increased private-sector participation in port operations. By addressing these issues, he believes Ghana can bolster businesses, promote regional trade, and enhance its standing as a regional trade hub.
