Fix Tema Port, roads to cut logistics costs and boost trade — Oro Oil CEO, Maxwell Commey

Oro Oil Ghana Limited CEO Maxwell Commey has emphasized the urgent need to address congestion, high logistics costs and weak inland connectivity at Ghana's ports, specifically mentioning the Tema Port. He asserts that these issues are directly impacting the competitiveness, planning and job creation of agro-industrial firms like Oro Oil Ghana, which rely on cost-effective and reliable movement of goods.

Commey proposes targeted infrastructure upgrades, digitalization, private-sector participation and better coordination among agencies along the trade corridor as potential solutions. Rising trade volumes have put pressure on Tema's landside operations, causing delays, yard congestion and higher costs. Empty-container backlogs and poor maintenance of access roads further exacerbate the congestion.

Commey advocates for rehabilitating port access roads serving the Tema Harbour area and treating them as a crucial part of Ghana's logistics infrastructure. Aligning infrastructure investments with export ambitions could benefit exporters of palm oil, cocoa and other agricultural products by reducing demurrage and inventory costs.

Greater use of digital systems and private-sector participation in port operations and services are also necessary to improve information sharing and accountability. By strengthening inland connectivity and road infrastructure, Ghana can enhance its position as a regional trade gateway and boost overall economic growth.
