Fire destroys 60pc of Pos Laju building in Bekenu, no injuries reported

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 29 — A fire ravaged roughly three-quarters of a Pos Laju building in Bekenu, a location some 47km southwest of Miri in Sarawak, this morning, leaving no one hurt. The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department's Operations Centre relayed the news in a statement today, informing readers that they had received a distress call at 8:44am.

Within minutes, five firefighters from the Batu Niah Fire and Rescue Station sprang into action to tackle the inferno. Led by Senior Fire Officer II Azalan Azaman, the team arrived at the scene approximately 9:30am to find the 15.2m by 12.2m Pos Laju building engulfed in flames. After a cursory examination, the officers determined that an estimated 60 percent of the permanent structure had succumbed to the blaze.

No victims were reported to have perished or been injured during the incident, the department reported.

Firefighters tackled the blaze using a hose line measuring approximately 122 meters, equipped with two nozzles, while also tapping into a nearby water source. The flames were brought under control by 9:58am, and follow-up operations, including extinguishing any remaining embers and a thorough inspection, continued at the scene. The operation involved a Compact Rescue Tender and a team of five firefighters. The source of the fire and the estimated financial losses remain undetermined.
