Fire destroys 60pc of Pos Laju building in Bekenu, no injuries reported

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 29 — A fire ravaged approximately 60 percent of a Pos Laju building in Bekenu, situated about 47km southwest of Miri in Sarawak, early today, with no casualties reported. The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department's Operations Centre announced in a statement that they received an emergency call at 8:44am prior to dispatching a team of five firefighters from the Batu Niah Fire and Rescue Station.

Led by Senior Fire Officer II Azalan Azaman, the team arrived at the scene around 9:30am to find the Pos Laju building, measuring approximately 15.2m by 12.2m, ablaze. The initial assessment revealed that the fire had consumed around 60 percent of the permanent structure. According to the department, no victims were either involved or harmed during the incident.

Firefighters utilized a hose line extending 122 meters with two nozzles, alongside drawing water from an open source to combat the blaze. The fire was successfully contained by 9:58am, and ongoing extinguishing and follow-up operations were conducted at the scene. A Compact Rescue Tender and five firefighters were assigned for the operation. The origin of the fire and the estimated financial losses are yet to be determined.
