Fed Chair Warsh Signals Rate Hikes May Be Needed with US Inflation Stubbornly Elevated

Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh signaled on Friday that interest rate hikes may be necessary as U.S. inflation remains stubbornly high, suggesting the central bank could raise rates in the coming months. Speaking at the Fed's annual conference in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Warsh acknowledged that recent U.S. reports show some cooling of inflation but stated, "they do not tell me that underlying trends have meaningfully improved."

He emphasized that the Fed must be confident that underlying inflation is moving towards its 2% target at a sufficient speed. Warsh did not imply an immediate rate hike but aimed to dispel perceptions that inflation is no longer a threat. The comments from the new Fed chair were seen by Wall Street as reassurance that fighting inflation remains a priority.

Short-term yields on the two-year Treasury slightly increased from 4.22% to 4.30% after Warsh's speech, indicating expectations for higher yields. However, longer-term yields on 10-year and 30-year Treasuries remained mostly flat, suggesting less concern about sustained higher rates. While some economists praised Warsh for conveying a tougher stance on inflation without providing detailed guidance, others noted that his remarks may not have clarified the timing of any potential Fed rate hikes.
