Families cling on to hope after Nepal-Tibet border disaster

Hope remains, albeit waning, for the families of 49 Malaysian and three Singaporean travelers still missing after the Nepal-Tibet border flood disaster on August 26. Among the 75 family members present in Batu Caves was Jamaliah Tengku Ismail, who expressed her mixed emotions about her 68-year-old husband, Wan Nasir Abdul Talib.

She stated she remains hopeful but accepts whatever the outcome may be. Nasir had journeyed with friends from his neighborhood in Shah Alam to the Nepal-Tibet border, where he had planned the trip for months. Jamaliah recounted that he called her during the journey, but she failed to answer. Before departing, he had sent her a message.

They were later located at a cafe about an hour before the flash floods hit. Nasir had been upbeat the night before, excited for the trip, which he joined mainly to admire the scenery. He may have reached higher ground or found shelter, as the group included some skilled in survival techniques, including a few firemen. As long as there are no new leads, any lack of news is still considered a positive sign.

The families are desperate to locate their loved ones as quickly as possible. Jamaliah urged the community to continue searching, emphasizing that time is of the essence. One of the travelers, Jason Ngeow, was accompanied by his friend. Jason's sister, Joanne Ngeow, said he had last been seen two weeks ago in their hometown in Ipoh.

She described him as fit, active, and accustomed to travel. Jason had told her he was going on a relaxing hike, but his family remains hopeful despite the challenges of shielding their elderly parents from the devastating news.
