Bills inform punter Wishnowsky he will be released, AP source. Hardman among 13 players cut by team

The Buffalo Bills informed veteran punter Mitch Wishnowsky that he will be released, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. Wishnowsky's release will be finalized on Sunday when all NFL teams must finalize their 53-player rosters. The team made similar cuts on Saturday, releasing 13 players, including veteran receiver/punt returner Mecole Hardman.

At 34 years old, Wishnowsky did not secure the position in an offseason competition against rookie seventh-round draft pick Tommy Doman, who averaged 48 yards per attempt on seven punts during the preseason. Hardman averaged 42 yards on three attempts, including a notable 19-yarder in a preseason game against Pittsburgh. The move enables the Bills to save approximately $1.1 million in salary cap space.

Wishnowsky, an Australian native, played his first six seasons with San Francisco before joining Buffalo a month into the previous season. Mecole Hardman was out of the running among a crowded receiving corps, while Ray Davis, who excels at both kick and punt returns, is poised to take over Hardman's punt-return duties. Davis already set an NFL record with a 30.4-yard average on kick returns and scored a touchdown on 31 attempts last season.

Hardman, a veteran with eight seasons in the NFL, signed with Buffalo in November after being released by Green Bay.
