At least 37 dead after Russian drone attack triggers multiple blasts and fire at warehouse near Kyiv

A Russian drone attack in Bucha, near Kyiv, has resulted in at least 37 deaths and dozens injured after triggering a large fire and multiple explosions that persisted for hours. Initial reports suggest the warehouse likely stored ammunition, leading to catastrophic consequences. President Volodymyr Zelensky vowed to hold those responsible accountable.

Kyiv region military administration head Tymur Tkachenko stated that 37 fatalities were confirmed by Saturday afternoon, making it one of the deadliest incidents in Kyiv since the war began over four years ago. He expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and reported that over 40 people were injured, with more than 380 individuals, including numerous children, evacuated from the area. A minimum of 50 residential buildings sustained damage, as evidenced by videos and photos shared by residents.

Russia's defense ministry claimed its forces targeted an arms depot where drone-making equipment was stored. Zelensky emphasized the need for an investigation into the incident, stating that ammunition should not be stored near residential areas. The Prosecutor General's office announced an investigation into "the circumstances surrounding the explosion on the premises of the facility and the actions of the officials responsible," noting that explosive materials were stored at the site.

Kyiv has faced relentless Russian attacks over the past two days, with over 28 air raid alerts between midnight on Thursday and midday on Saturday. Most of the recent attacks involved jet-powered drones, which pose a significant threat due to their speed and difficulty evading Ukraine's air defenses. As of now, more than 300 emergency services personnel are on the scene.
