Arthur Fery into first ATP Tour final after last-four opponent retires

Arthur Fery achieved his first ATP Tour final following the injury retirement of his semi-final opponent, James Duckworth, at the Winston-Salem Open. The Briton, who had led 6-4 and 2-1 in their last-four match, was forced to withdraw after 59 minutes of play due to injury, leaving Fery to face a tough final against Ignacio Buse.

Buse, who previously defeated Tommy Paul in Hamburg, will compete in his second ATP Tour final after earlier success at the ATP 500 tournament in Hamburg. Fery expressed his happiness at reaching the final, recognizing that it was not the ideal outcome but acknowledging the significance of the accomplishment. The 24-year-old British player has now secured the top ranking in the country, surpassing Cameron Norrie.

His victory at the Winston-Salem Open marks his first final at the North Carolina tournament, an ATP 250 event. This success has propelled Fery to a career-high ranking of 33rd in the world, following his impressive performance at Wimbledon and a strong start to the North American hard-court season. He had previously defeated Duckworth at the Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati before suffering a narrow three-set loss to eighth seed Alex de Minaur. Fery will now face 13th seed Lorenzo Musetti in the first round of the final.
