Army confirms hack attempt on official X account

The Nigerian Army has announced that its official X social media account was subjected to an unauthorized attempt to gain access, which occurred on Saturday, August 29, 2026, around 5pm local time. The Army described the incident as a cybersecurity breach and has since implemented immediate protective measures to secure the platform and prevent any further compromise.

Colonel Appolonia Anele, the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, stated that technical and protective steps were activated to safeguard the account and preserve the accuracy of the information shared with the public.

The Army declared that it is currently working diligently to fully secure the affected account and regain exclusive administrative control. It warned members of the public and the media to remain vigilant and disregard any suspicious, unauthorized, misleading, or unverified content posted from the affected account, noting that such content does not represent the official stance of the Nigerian Army.

To assist in maintaining the integrity of information, the Army encouraged members of the public and the media to verify any updates or details through its other official communication channels, which include Facebook accounts @hqnigerianarmy and @nigerianarmyinfo, Instagram accounts @hqnigerianarmy and @nigerianarmyinfo, X account @nigerianarmyinfo, and YouTube accounts @hqnigerianarmy and @nigerianarmyinfotv.

The Nigerian Army reiterated its commitment to information integrity, operational security, and responsible strategic communication, and expressed gratitude to the public for its vigilance and cooperation. They pledged to provide further updates as the situation evolves.
