World’s youngest reigning traditional monarch dies aged 34

The world's youngest reigning traditional monarch, Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, has passed away at the age of 34, according to Uganda's Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki. Oyo ascended to the throne at the tender age of three in 1995, following his father's death. The cause of the king's death has not been disclosed by the Tooro kingdom, but it is reported that he had been critically ill and receiving treatment in the United States.

Despite Uganda operating under an elected president and parliament, traditional kingdoms like Tooro continue to wield considerable cultural influence. Oyo, as the 13th monarch, governed over two million people and was recognized by Guinness World Records as the world's youngest reigning monarch. He ruled the kingdom, founded in the early 19th century, that is home to more than two million people.

Upon hearing of the king's death, Akiiki called it an "immeasurable loss" to the royal family and the people of Tooro. He urged the kingdom's inhabitants to remain united, calm, and prayerful during this difficult period. Oyo was not officially married, but his heir, a young prince, will be formally recognized in accordance with Tooro kingdom customs.

Throughout his reign, Oyo was well-respected by his people. He promoted youth empowerment, education, climate conservation, and awareness of HIV/AIDS, among other causes. The Buganda Kingdom, Uganda's largest traditional institution, expressed condolences and labeled Oyo as a valuable figure to the nation. Even the Rwenzururu Kingdom offered its condolences, highlighting the monarch's significance to Uganda.

Various organizations and individuals paid tribute to the late king. The Federation of Uganda Football Associations honored Oyo as a "true friend of the beautiful game" and observed a moment of silence before all matches until September 4th. Government minister Margaret Muhanga described the kingdom's mood as "sombre," noting that the young king had an impact on his people.

She also announced plans to plant a million trees in Oyo's honor during the mourning period, encouraging neighboring districts to do the same. Ugandan musician Juliana Kanyomozi expressed her sorrow on social media, calling it a "very dark day for Tooro." Bobi Wine, a musician-turned-politician, also asked for Oyo's soul to rest in eternal peace.
