World's youngest reigning traditional monarch dies aged 34

Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, a traditional ruler in Uganda and the world's youngest reigning monarch, has died at the age of 34, according to Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki. Oyo became king of Tooro, a kingdom in western Uganda, when he was only three years old in 1995 following his father's death. The cause of his death remains undisclosed, but a Ugandan government minister suggested he had been critically ill and was receiving treatment in the United States.

Despite Uganda being governed by an elected president, traditional kingdoms continue to hold significant cultural influence. The Tooro Kingdom, which Oyo ruled over more than two million people, is one such institution. Oyo was the 13th monarch of this kingdom, which was established in the early 19th century. He was officially crowned as king at the age of 18 in 2010.

Oyo was not officially married but left behind a son who will become the next monarch. The kingdom follows a hereditary system for selecting its rulers. Oyo was well-respected by his people and was known for promoting youth empowerment, education, climate conservation, and HIV/AIDS awareness. The Buganda Kingdom, the largest and most influential traditional institution in Uganda, expressed its condolences and called Oyo a valuable figure to Uganda.
