Unpaid fees leave Ghanaian scholarship students at University of Memphis in limbo

Government scholarships for Ghanaian students at the University of Memphis in the United States have left a group of affected students in a state of uncertainty. The students, who are currently facing the possibility of dismissal, have been without crucial communication from the authorities responsible for managing their scholarships for about three months.

Dwaso Nsem, an affected scholarship recipient who spoke anonymously on Adom FM’s morning show, expressed frustration over the lack of concrete responses from the relevant authorities. He stated that despite numerous attempts to get answers, the authorities have provided no clear instructions on how to resolve the issue. The students have reached out to Ghana’s diplomatic representatives in the United States and written emails, but have received no positive response.

The outstanding tuition and accommodation fees have reportedly prevented the affected students from accessing essential university services, such as their online portals and attending lectures. About 120 students are currently impacted, down from a previous total of around 200 beneficiaries. Some students have even left the university due to the stress of the situation, though their whereabouts remain unknown.
