Umno invites Pas leaders to 2026 general assembly

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno state leaders have received approval to engage in discussions with other political parties regarding possible collaboration in upcoming elections, according to Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki. Any potential agreements must be founded on genuine sincerity and trust, said Asyraf during a press conference following the Umno Supreme Council meeting.

The party's leadership has also taken into account research by various agencies and academics concerning public opinion on the political climate in the nation. Their findings highlight the Malays' desire for Muslim unity and the need to prioritize Malay interests and their position as the cornerstone of the country's political stability, stated Asyraf.

As uncertainty surrounds the potential cooperation between the Umno-led Barisan Nasional and either Pakatan Harapan or Perikatan Nasional in the upcoming Melaka election, the remarks by Asyraf come into focus. Prior to the election, BN chairman Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had indicated that the coalition aimed to defend all 21 seats it won in the 2021 state election while keeping the door open for electoral cooperation.

BN secured 21 out of 28 seats in the election, while PH obtained five, and PN gained two. Pas has held initial talks with Umno about a potential BN-PN collaboration in Melaka, although Bersatu allegedly was excluded from the negotiations. Following these preliminary discussions, Pas president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang later suggested that PN was willing to terminate cooperation with BN if the latter decided to contest alongside PH. The Melaka state assembly's term ends on December 27.
