A new National Park Service report supports Donald Trump's proposed 250-foot tall arch, despite concerns it will disrupt the historical sightlines of numerous Washington DC landmarks. The arch, positioned near the Arlington Memorial Bridge, is expected to alter the visual relationships of iconic sites such as the Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, and Jefferson Memorial.

These landmarks were meticulously aligned over decades to convey significant moments in American history and evoke symbolism through purposeful sightlines. The Park Service report, released on Friday, acknowledges that the arch's introduction will disrupt the alignment between the Lincoln Memorial, Memorial Bridge, and Arlington House, which was intended to symbolically unite North and South.

Additionally, the arch's presence will impact the National Mall, US Capitol, Washington Monument, Jefferson Memorial, Georgetown Historic District, Old Naval Observatory, Francis Scott Key Bridge, and the National Cathedral. The report concludes that alternative locations outside Memorial Circle are not feasible, as either relocating the arch or eliminating the memorial feature would undermine the project's purpose.

This report may bolster Trump's administration's case against the legal challenge filed by three veterans and historians, who argue that such a significant undertaking should be decided by Congress and not through executive action.
