Transport disrupted in Jakarta after unrest following protest

Jakarta, Indonesia experienced disruption to its transport system on Friday after street protests turned into late night rioting. Protesters kicked gates during a demonstration against corruption outside parliament on Thursday morning, as security was heightened for the anniversary of deadly anti-government protests from the previous year. These demonstrations, which took place near parliament, were met with heavy police presence.

The protest escalated into rioting on Friday, with individuals in black shirts setting fires and attacking police. Rioters hurled rocks and sticks at officers, who responded with water cannon and tear gas. A Reuters witness heard multiple loud bangs in the area of the unrest. Police did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Friday, and Jakarta police had yet to issue a statement.

Several commuter rail routes and bus routes near the parliamentary building were suspended or diverted, causing closures and road disruptions. Toll roads near parliament were also closed. The protest came at a challenging time for President Prabowo Subianto, a retired general who was elected in 2024 with a large majority but is struggling to restore public confidence. His approval rating had dropped to 38% in a recent poll due to concerns over his costly policies.

Reports indicate that 65 people were arrested for attempting to cause unrest, with police seizing air guns, communication devices, and materials for making Molotov cocktails. Jakarta police spokesperson Budi Hermanto confirmed that rioting had indeed occurred, acknowledging that acts of vandalism can disrupt social order and stability.
