Tobi Amusan Dethroned as Sprint Hurdles World Record Holder

Nigeria's world record holder in women's 100m hurdles, Tobi Amusan, saw her title taken away at the Wanda Diamond League Meeting in Zurich. American sprint hurdler Masai Russell clocked a time of 12.09 seconds, just 0.03 seconds faster than Amusan's previous record set at the 2022 World Athletics Championship in Eugene, USA. Russell, who won Olympic gold in the event in Paris two years ago, had previously come close to the record twice this year, but finally broke it in Zurich.

Russell's flawless run over the hurdles led her to victory, with American sprinter Amusan placing second in 12.23 seconds. European champion Nadine Visser finished third, clocking 12.34 seconds. Russell's new world record awaits official ratification by World Athletics. The night also saw Brazilian Alison dos Santos set a new world record in the men's 400m hurdles with a time of 45.80, shaving 0.14 seconds off the previous record set by Karsten Warholm at the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021.

Dos Santos, the 2022 world champion, led the way, leaving Warholm in second place. In the women's 100m hurdles event, a photo finish separated Olympic champion Julien Alfred and world champion Melissa Jefferson-Wooden, both clocking 10.70 seconds. Alfred emerged victorious by five thousandths of a second, marking just the second time in history that two women had run 10.70 seconds or faster in the same race.

US sprinter Kenny Bednarek shone in the men's 200m, finishing with a world-leading time of 19.62, just 0.05 seconds shy of his personal best and 0.20 seconds ahead of South Africa's Sinesipho Dambile.
