The Iran War Has Handed Russia a Strategic Opening in Europe

The ongoing war with Iran has provided Russia with a strategic advantage in Ukraine, according to Washington. As the United States exhausts its stockpile of weapons Europe needs to deter Russia, the country is shifting military capabilities to the Gulf region. This development has prompted CIA Director John Ratcliffe to travel to Moscow, the first such visit by a CIA director in over a year.

During his trip, Ratcliffe met with Russian foreign intelligence chief Sergei Naryshkin and cautioned against attacking a NATO member. He also sought support from Moscow against Iran, likely leveraging talks with Ukraine as leverage. Despite assurances from Trump that Russia would not target NATO, the situation indicates otherwise.

The depleted air defenses in Europe, particularly the shortage of Patriot interceptor stocks, pose a significant challenge. U.S. forces face limited capability to defend against even a single Russian ballistic missile strike, as many of the interceptors have been redirected towards the Middle East. It will take years to replenish these stocks through production in the U.S. and Europe.

This precarious position leaves the alliance vulnerable to limited missile strikes, sabotage operations, cyberattacks, or deniable incursions. Moscow has already warned that British military installations could be attacked if Ukraine continues using British Storm Shadow missiles against targets in Russia. Britain has also agreed to release classified technology to enable Ukraine to produce these missiles independently.
