Tampa City Council Narrowly Approves Rays Stadium Funding

On a frigid Thursday night, the Tampa City Council voted 4-3 to approve public funding for a new $2.36 billion baseball stadium. The $80 million package represents just 3% of the stadium's total cost, but signals progress in a long-standing effort to secure a new home for the Tampa Bay Rays. The vote comes after a contentious six-hour meeting that included public testimony from both supporters and opponents of the project.

City officials framed the approval as a step forward in attracting jobs, housing, and education opportunities to the area, while opponents questioned the use of public funds for a privately-owned facility. The approval will now move to a vote by the larger Hillsborough County Commission. Rays CEO Ken Babby expressed gratitude for the council's decision, calling it a "really important step forward" in securing a permanent home for the team.

The Rays will repay the funds through tax revenue generated by the ballpark, with the project also requiring financial contributions from the city and Hillsborough County.
