Switzerland steps up drone defences amid European rearmament

Geneva, August 28 - Switzerland announced plans to establish a military drone battalion, as European nations increase their defense spending and incorporate advanced technology. The defense ministry stated that the army will deploy a specialized drone battalion starting in 2028, focusing on reconnaissance, operations, and defense.

To support this initiative, a civilian-military center for drones and robotics will be created, featuring a technology hub and a military command. The ministry emphasized that new solutions will be jointly developed, tested, and rapidly adapted for military use.

Drones have become a crucial component in modern warfare, serving various purposes such as reconnaissance, intelligence gathering, targeting enemy positions, and conducting strikes, often aided by artificial intelligence. In recent years, the Swiss defence ministry has observed a rise in drone flights near military installations and critical infrastructure.

Switzerland has maintained a policy of well-armed neutrality since 1516, recognized internationally since 1815. The country currently enforces mandatory military conscription for men. In response to the growing prominence of drones in conflicts, the Swiss defense ministry declared drones, counter-drone defense, and robotics as a strategic priority.
