A Tokyo ward is revising its ordinances to make it mandatory for saunas to have an emergency buzzer following a fatal accident. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government's Minato-ku, or Port District, announced on November 21 that it will oblige sauna facilities to install a buzzer that can be easily pressed in the event of an emergency. The move comes after a user was found dead in a sauna in October. The local government will hold a public hearing to collect opinions on the mandatory installation of emergency buzzers at saunas. The buzzer will be required to be installed in all saunas in Minato-ku by the end of March next year. The district is home to many high-rise buildings, including the Tokyo City Hall and the Mori Tower. Minato-ku is planning to take further measures to prevent a recurrence of such accidents.
