Stakeholders reject King’s College proposed concession, threaten lawsuit

Parents and students at King's College, Lagos, have rejected the Federal Government's proposal to lease the 117-year-old institution to the King's College Old Boys Association, threatening legal action and disrupting the upcoming academic term. Hundreds of parents and students protested on Thursday across major roads in Lagos Island, demanding the Federal Government retain control of the college.

The demonstrators carried signs stating "King’s College is not for sale" and "Federal Government, we say no to concession." Peter Oluwaleye, Chairman of the school's Parent-Teacher Association, said parents had repeatedly communicated their opposition to the proposed concession but received no response. He emphasized that the college should remain under the Federal Government's control and criticized claims by the old boys’ association that they now own the school.

Oluwaleye warned that the old boys should instead support the institution through voluntary contributions rather than seeking to take over its management. He questioned the association's ability to manage such a large and reputable institution under the proposed 35-year concession. The PTA chairman stated that parents would seek legal action if the Federal Government proceeded with the concession and that they also opposed the resumption of students for the new academic session, scheduled for September 13, until their concerns were addressed.
