Sovereign Tech Agency invests €500k in Flatpak

The German Sovereign Tech Agency has committed €508,640 to bolster the development and maintenance of Flatpak, a crucial platform for Linux desktop software distribution. This two-year investment, coordinated by Modal and supported by Para-Real Ltd., aims to enhance Flatpak's security, robustness, and overall user experience. Flatpak is the primary method for distributing applications on operating systems such as Fedora Silverblue, openSUSE Aeon, SteamOS, and GNOME OS.

While Flatpak is an established and robust solution, it still lags behind proprietary platforms like Android and iOS in terms of security and sandboxing capabilities. Certain technical limitations, including the inability to separate audio and microphone access, as well as the absence of dedicated Portals for networking and VPNs, remain.

The project, led by Sebastian and Adrian, will be executed by a team of experienced contractors, including Philip Withnall, Julian Sparber, and Dhanuka Warusadura. The initiative hopes to build long-term community capacity and introduce critical infrastructure to address the current gaps in Flatpak's sandboxing story.
