Solar power battery storage procurement to improve electricity supply reliability

Dr. Yussif Sulemana, a Technical Advisor at the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, highlighted that the government's procurement of battery energy storage systems is set to bolster Ghana's electricity grid and enhance power supply reliability. During the 2026 Energy Sustainability Leadership Conference in Accra, he emphasized the deployment of advanced battery energy storage systems, which would improve frequency stability, provide operational reserves, facilitate renewable energy integration, and bolster system recovery post major disturbances.

Sulemana pointed out that despite efforts to stabilize the grid, pockets of disturbances still persist, underscoring the ongoing need for grid enhancements. The investment in battery storage systems, he explained, would simultaneously support renewable energy integration, grid stabilization, and quick recovery from disruptions. He urged corporate Ghana to transition from merely consuming electricity or serving as contractors to government entities, transforming into investors, innovators, and strategic partners in the nation's energy evolution.

Board Chairman of the Safety Communication Consult, Dr. Kojo Ackaah-Kwarteng, echoed Sulemana's sentiments, stressing that inclusive public energy investment frameworks are crucial for a collaborative approach towards sustainable and efficient energy production. He advocated for businesses to see energy sustainability not as a mere compliance obligation but as a strategic advantage, urging them to accelerate investments in renewable energy, energy efficiency, smart technologies, cleaner production, sustainable transportation, and innovative financing models.

Ackaah-Kwarteng underscored that beyond policies and investments, a culture of energy leadership is imperative. He urged CEOs, institutions, and employees to recognize that energy sustainability transcends environmental concerns, embodying economic, social, and national development implications. The 3rd edition of the Energy Sustainability Leadership Conference, ESLC 2026, focused on fostering public-private partnerships to expedite Ghana's energy transformation.

Discussions centered on expanding renewable energy generation, enhancing financial performance, bolstering resilience and efficiency, promoting sustainable energy solutions, and leveraging technology to augment energy production and supply. Participants stressed the importance of stronger collaboration between government and the private sector to mobilize investment, foster innovation, and establish a more sustainable and reliable energy sector.

The conference, themed "Public–Private Synergy: The Role of Corporate Ghana in National Energy Transformation," concluded with a renewed commitment to these collaborative efforts.
