Mumbai milk price hike: How much prices rose, why, and how other metros compare

Mumbai households will see a rise of ₹9 per litre in the price of fresh tabela milk starting September 1, 2026, as producers raise the price from ₹93 to ₹102. This significant increase, representing nearly a 10% rise, is attributed to higher costs of cattle, feed, and fodder. The Mumbai Milk Producers Association approved the revision, citing the rising cost of milch animals, cattle feed, grass, and fodder.

The hike comes ahead of the festive season, when demand for milk and milk-based products typically increases. While Mumbai's fresh tabela milk is a locally supplied, fresh product, it is not directly equivalent to standardized packaged milk sold by large dairy brands. In contrast, Delhi and Kolkata generally have lower milk prices than Chennai and Bengaluru, which benefit from extensive state-backed dairy networks.

For Mumbai consumers, the immediate impact of the price hike is relatively simple: households buying two litres of tabela milk daily will spend ₹18 more each day, or about ₹540 extra per month. The price increase could also affect the cost of milk-based products for small food businesses during the festive season. However, the Mumbai price hike is separate from a statewide increase in Maharashtra, and the comparison between Mumbai, Delhi, and other cities is complex due to variations in milk types, fat content, and brand differences.
