This cooling effect would also reduce water loss from the leaves by up to 42.6% and from both crops and soil by 22.4% daily. As a result, air-cooling effects would also lower the temperature of solar panels by 5.6°C. This helped mitigate the overall efficiency decline of solar panels by 15%.

Interestingly, despite receiving 47% less direct sunlight, photosynthesis in the shaded tomatoes declined by only 31%, suggesting that the cooler microclimate offsets the decrease in sunlight. The researchers found that the laborers tending to and harvesting crops would experience a 4.46°C decrease in average temperatures. In the simulated scenario, installing solar panels on tomato farms reduced perceived temperatures from 39°C to around 35°C, a significant reduction in a warming world where high-heat labor poses health risks.
