Best eclipse photos! Nearly total lunar August 27-28

On August 27-28, 2026, skywatchers around the world captured a nearly total lunar eclipse, according to EarthSky's Community Photos. Cecille Kennedy from Corvallis, Oregon, observed the eclipse as the Sturgeon full moon turned a rusty reddish orange due to the deep partial lunar eclipse that covered about 96% of the moon in Earth's umbral shadow.

Raul Cortes from La Huasteca, Mexico, and Sheryl R. Garrison from Southern Alberta, Canada, both captured images of the event. Paul Miolsnes-Nelson, near the North Entrance to Yellowstone National Park, noted that clouds moving through added to the experience. Sergei Timofeevski in Carlsbad, California, managed to capture the eclipse just minutes before it reached its maximum, without having realized it was occurring.

Jesús M. Garcia Flores from Spain witnessed the nearly total eclipse on the morning of August 28, emphasizing that the eclipse happened simultaneously for everyone, despite the difference in local times. Jaroslav Kourzenov in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, photographed the lunar eclipse over Victoria Harbor, with the ship Celebrity Edge docked alongside the waterfront.

Lastly, Fabrizio Pinto in Urla, Izmir, Turkey, saw the eclipsed moon setting as the sky was perfectly clear, turbulent, and corresponded with the historical birthplace of Anaxagoras, who first fully understood the science of both solar and lunar eclipses.
