Former Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri M Saravanan has pleaded not guilty to three charges of accepting bribes totaling more than RM1 million. The charges stem from approving foreign worker quota applications for TYKB Engineering Sdn Bhd in 2022. Saravanan, 58, was accused of receiving three payments from Tan Teck Lim, the Director of Vectica Resources Sdn Bhd.
He allegedly accepted RM150,000 on June 16, 2022, and RM350,000 on July 7, 2022, as inducements to approve the quota applications. On the third count, he allegedly received a RM597,000 cheque through Syed Amirul Syed Ahmad in July 2022. If convicted, Saravanan faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to RM10,000 or five times the bribe amount, whichever is greater.
The court set bail at RM450,000 and ordered Saravanan to report to the MACC office every three months and avoid contacting witnesses directly or indirectly. The next court date is set for September 29.
