S. Korean coach for Vietnam men's national football team eyes historic World Cup berth

SEOUL, Aug. 28 (Yonhap) -- South Korean football tactician Kim Sang-sik expressed his ambition to lead Vietnam to their first World Cup appearance after guiding the Southeast Asian nation to victory in the ASEAN Hyundai Cup. The South Korean coach delivered his comments via a Zoom call with South Korean media on Friday, following Vietnam's 4-2 aggregate win over Thailand in the final.

Kim acknowledged the significant support and encouragement provided by Vietnamese fans during the tournament, noting the team's success was a result of their dedication and the unwavering support from the crowd. He also highlighted his focus on constantly observing and adjusting to the physical conditions, abilities, and responsiveness of his players, which he believes has contributed to Vietnam's impressive track record of 26 consecutive wins, including 22 victories and four draws.

Kim expressed gratitude towards his predecessor, Park Hang-seo, a fellow South Korean who previously coached Vietnam's national team, recognizing the foundation he laid for Kim to build upon. He also praised the contributions of South Korean companies operating in Vietnam, noting how discussions about football with their Vietnamese counterparts helped create a friendly atmosphere.

Kim is optimistic about Vietnam's prospects in the AFC Asian Cup, which will take place in Saudi Arabia in January 2027. The tournament will see Vietnam face their native South Korea in Group E. The South Korean coach's primary objective is to develop Vietnam into a team capable of qualifying for the World Cup, a goal he has expressed since his appointment.
