Rep proposes one-stop platform for non-Muslim religious affairs in Sabah

KOTA KINABALU (Aug 28): Sabah assemblyman Samuel Wong has suggested the government create a dedicated unit to coordinate matters related to non-Muslim religious bodies and mission schools. This proposed unit would serve as a focused point of contact, ensuring the specific needs of churches, temples, kuils, and mission schools are better understood and addressed.

Wong emphasized that this proposal aims to strengthen cooperation and inclusiveness among Sabah's diverse religious communities, rather than promoting religious separation. He highlighted the crucial role religious organizations play in various aspects of community welfare, including charity, education, and youth development, particularly in rural and interior areas.

Wong acknowledged the existing government assistance but stressed that one-off allocations might not always meet ongoing needs. He proposed that the new unit would streamline communication between religious bodies and mission schools and relevant government agencies, offering support without replacing existing departments. Wong also mentioned that Sabah could study Sarawak's Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) to learn from their experience and adapt suitable elements for Sabah's context.

He stressed that a more coordinated approach would enhance communication between the government and religious organizations, ultimately benefiting all Sabahans by allowing them to better appreciate and appreciate the work of these organizations in their communities. Wong concluded by reiterating his hope for continued harmonious relations among Sabah's diverse religious communities, urging everyone to work together towards a better future for all.
