Rapidly Swelling Lakes Spur New Flood Warnings in Nepal, China

Rescuers rushed to save hundreds of people trapped by a devastating flood in Nepal and China on Friday, as authorities warned of rapidly swelling lakes and heightened flood risks. The deadly disaster has already claimed at least 389 lives, with the toll expected to climb as entire communities, roads, and bridges were swept away by the torrent of mud, rocks, and ice. Over 1,200 people remain missing, including tourists from India, Malaysia, Australia, the UK, and the US.

In a harrowing rescue operation at the Trishuli-1 construction site, where a hydroelectric plant is under development, emergency teams airlifted more than 300 survivors from the flooded area. The disaster has affected eight key hydropower projects in the region, some still in progress and others already operational.

The Lhende River, which flows between Nepal and China, has been blocked by debris, causing water levels to rise and form a new lake above the Rasuwagadhi border crossing. Satellite images reveal that this newly formed lake could potentially breach its banks, posing a significant threat to downstream communities, according to the Nepalese disaster risk reduction and management authority.

Authorities are urging residents in the affected areas to remain vigilant and on high alert, as the situation remains precarious. The remote mountain region is presenting a significant challenge for rescue efforts, with the looming risk of additional lakes forming and further exacerbating the flooding.
