Rapidly swelling lakes spur new flood warnings in Nepal, China

Rapidly swelling lakes have sparked new flood warnings in Nepal and China, after a torrent of mud, rocks and ice devastated the region. At least 389 people are confirmed dead, with the toll expected to rise as entire villages, roads and bridges were swept away. Over 1,200 others are still missing, including tourists from India, Malaysia, Australia, the UK and the US.

Rescue teams have been scrambling through mud and debris to reach stranded survivors, with dramatic airlifts saving over 300 people trapped near the Trishuli-1 hydroelectric project. The disaster has affected eight key hydropower projects, both under construction and operational. The Lhende River, whose flow had been blocked, has caused a new lake to form above the Rasuwagadhi border crossing, threatening to overflow and endanger downstream areas.

Authorities urge residents and concerned parties to remain vigilant and alert, as additional lakes may form in the area.
