Punjab Orders Fire Safety Drills in Govt Hospitals

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has issued urgent directives for comprehensive safety audits, infrastructure improvements, and regular mock drills in public-sector hospitals across the province. All deputy commissioners are tasked with conducting an immediate inventory of fire extinguishers, firefighting equipment, and emergency exits in coordination with Rescue 1122.

The S&GAD Secretary must provide a consolidated assessment report to the chief minister. Rescue 1122, along with local health, housing, and local government departments, will audit hydrant points and install new ones within seven days under commissioners' supervision. Provincial health secretaries have three days to inspect electrical wiring, air-conditioning units, and medical equipment to prevent fire hazards.

Monthly emergency mock drills will become a permanent feature in public-sector hospitals to ensure readiness. Health secretaries and the Infrastructure Development Authority of Punjab will submit a feasibility report within a week for technology-driven fire alarm systems, smoke detectors, and automated sprinklers in critical areas.

This measure addresses growing concerns over hospital fire safety and emergency preparedness in the province.
