Punjab Likely to Extend Contracts of 25,000 Teachers

The Punjab government is poised to extend the contracts of approximately 25,000 School Teacher Interns (STIs) employed in public schools throughout the province. These contracts were set to expire on May 22, preceding the commencement of the summer holidays. The new academic year has already begun, yet a significant number of STIs are still awaiting a decision regarding their reappointment or contract renewal.

Just prior to the summer break, Punjab’s Education Minister had declared that these contracts would be extended thereafter. However, this decision has not yet been put into effect. The Punjab Education Department has forwarded the contract extension summary to the Chief Minister for his approval. The department has stated that the contracts will be extended only after the summary receives the necessary approval.

The Punjab Teachers Union has also been advocating for an immediate decision.
