Asante Kotoko secured the 2026 Democracy Cup after a thrilling penalty shootout victory against Hearts of Oak at the Baba Yara Stadium. The match, the third edition of the annual fixture between Ghana's two most successful clubs, ended goalless in regulation time. Kotoko took an early lead with three corners in the first two minutes, but their opener was ruled offside.

Despite creating numerous chances, both teams struggled to break through Hearts' resilient defense. The turning point came in the second half when Hearts' goalkeeper Benjamin Asare made crucial saves, while Danlad Ibrahim emerged as the hero by saving two of Hearts' penalties. Kotoko converted four of their spot-kicks, clinching a 4-1 victory and lifting the trophy.

This triumph marked Kotoko's second Democracy Cup title, adding another memorable chapter to their storied rivalry with Hearts of Oak. As champions, the Kumasi-based club will represent Ghana in a mini-tournament in the United States.
