Peter Cullen, the Voice of Optimus Prime and Eeyore, Dies at 85

Peter Cullen, the Canadian voice actor renowned for his iconic portrayals of Optimus Prime in the Transformers franchise and Eeyore in Disney's Winnie the Pooh, passed away on August 26 at the age of 85. His agent confirmed his death, with family noting that it was peaceful and surrounded by loved ones. The cause of death was not disclosed.

Cullen's career in voice acting spanned over six decades, with his distinctive voice becoming closely associated with two very different characters. He first voiced Optimus Prime in the 1984 animated series, bringing the heroic Autobot leader to life with a deep, measured tone. His approach was influenced by advice from his older brother, Larry Cullen, a veteran who advised him to avoid exaggerated heroics and instead embody strength through gentleness.

Cullen's distinctive voice continued to be a defining feature of Optimus Prime throughout the franchise's evolution. He voiced the character in subsequent animated series, live-action films, and the most recent entry, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts in 2023. Notably, his performance captured the essence of Optimus Prime across different generations, connecting with viewers from the original animated series to the latest cinematic releases.

In addition to Optimus Prime, Cullen lent his voice to Eeyore in Disney's Winnie the Pooh productions.
