Oti PWDs President calls for more livelihood programmes and support

The President of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in the Oti Region, Emmanuel Donkor, has urged the government to incorporate individuals with disabilities into major livelihood and social intervention programs. This call aims to alleviate poverty and foster self-reliance among PWDs. Although targeted support is currently available to some PWDs, Donkor emphasized that numerous others remain excluded from broader initiatives like Nkoko Nkitinkitin, agribusiness programs, and other government-led livelihood schemes.

He argued that enrolling PWDs in these programs could foster more sustainable income sources rather than depending solely on sporadic aid. Donkor made this appeal during an interview with Adom News, following a start-up kits distribution event organized by the Krachi East Municipal Assembly. He stressed that while periodic assistance is beneficial, PWDs require inclusion in programs capable of delivering consistent economic opportunities.

He noted that while the support was helpful, PWDs needed to be part of larger programs that generate steady income and growth. The Krachi East Municipal Assembly distributed various items, such as refrigerators, sewing machines, farm inputs, and cash assistance, to selected PWD beneficiaries, funded through the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) using a five percent allocation set aside for persons with disabilities.

The assembly's chief executive, Sarfo Nketia, urged beneficiaries to use the items for their intended purposes to ensure the support leads to tangible economic benefits. He warned against selling the equipment and pledged to intensify monitoring efforts to ensure proper usage. Nketia reaffirmed the Assembly's dedication to inclusive development, highlighting its commitment to empowering vulnerable groups and enhancing their living conditions.
