Number of missing in deadly Nepal, China floods jumps past 2,400

Over 2,400 people are now missing in Nepal and China following a devastating flood, surpassing earlier death tolls. The disaster, triggered by a glacial collapse, swept through villages, killing hundreds and causing further flooding. Rescuers are struggling to recover bodies, with 586 already found, some of which have been swept downstream as far as India.

Nepal's disaster authority added 933 hydropower workers to the missing list, including trekkers and pilgrims to Mount Kailash. Relatives, desperate for news, have gathered at hospitals, clinging to hope. The US Geological Survey attributed the disaster to a glacial collapse, while Nepali police warned of another dam burst on the Tibetan side.

China suspended rescue operations in the hardest-hit area due to the risk of renewed flooding, but later reported the threat had eased. Chinese President Xi Jinping offered aid to Nepal. Efforts to rescue survivors from the Trishuli 3A hydropower project continued, with 350 workers and residents brought to safety. Survivors in a makeshift Nepali hospital anxiously await news of their loved ones.
