Nepal flash floods death toll climbs to 472, more than 1,000 missing

On August 27, 2026, flash floods and landslides in Nepal claimed at least 165 lives and displaced entire villages on the Nepal-Tibet border. The death toll from the devastating floods has since risen to 469, including three fatalities in China's southwestern Xizang Autonomous Region, or Tibet, according to Anadolu Ajansi. A total of 667 people, comprising foreign nationals, remain missing in Nepal, as per the Nepal Tourism Board.

Beijing reported that over 550 individuals, including 260 foreign nationals, are unaccounted for in Tibet.

The catastrophic events hit northern and central Nepal early on Wednesday, inundating communities along the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers. The floods carried people and debris downstream, obliterating homes, bridges, roads, and other essential infrastructure. Communities and travelers were cut off from the rest of the country, stranding them in the disaster zone.

Search and rescue teams, comprising the Nepali Army, Nepal Police, and Armed Police Force, are actively engaged in rescue and evacuation efforts. Helicopters have been deployed to reach isolated areas and evacuate survivors, while ground teams continue to scour riverbanks and downstream settlements. The Nepal Tourism Board is still working to verify the whereabouts of tourists and travelers who were present in or passing through Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dhading when the floods struck.

The floods have severely damaged transport links and other infrastructure, further complicating rescue operations in the affected regions. Authorities are still reconciling casualty and missing-person reports from different areas to gain a clearer picture of the extent of the disaster.
