National Park Service backs Trump's arch, despite its impact on Washington's sightline

The federal government has reached a court agreement to extend a pause on border-related construction in Big Bend National Park until mid-September, a decision well-received by those opposing the contentious project. Customs and Border Protection had already halted activities after Border Patrol Commissioner Rodney Scott visited the park last week to consult with local officials.

The bulldozers had commenced work in the park's far southern region, causing widespread outrage. The Department of Homeland Security clarified that the bulldozers were engaged in initial design and survey work, not full-scale construction.

Scott's pause was set to end on Monday. In Big Bend National Park, the government's plans involve constructing a new road, installing detection technology, and erecting barriers to prevent border crossings. However, an attorney for the government stressed on Friday that the final design of what will be built in the park remains undecided.

During a court hearing in San Antonio, U.S. District Judge Orlando L. Garcia expressed hope that the two parties would use the extra time to collaborate and find a solution accommodating both sides' concerns. The park-related work is part of a $46 billion initiative by the Trump administration aimed at fortifying the 2,000-mile U.S.-Mexico border with steel bollard walls, vehicle barriers, and detection technology to combat illegal immigration and smuggling.

As construction has intensified, the administration has faced mounting resistance from landowners, environmental groups, and Native American communities.
