MTR to use 'skidding construction' for Hung Shui Kiu

The MTR has announced its intention to become the first railway operator globally to employ a revolutionary "skidding construction" method for the construction of Hung Shui Kiu Station on the Tuen Ma Line. This innovative technique will be utilized when building two 210-meter-long, 15-meter-wide station structures, each weighing approximately 10,000 tonnes, on an elevated viaduct between Tin Shui Wai and Siu Hong stations.

Capital Works Director Carl Devlin stated that the Tuen Ma Line services will experience only two days of disruption next year, during which the massive prefabricated station pieces will be guided into position along a track system, approximately 30 meters away from the viaduct. These skidding operations are planned for the late first quarter and the third quarter of the following year.

Devlin emphasized that extensive on-site trials will be conducted beforehand, ensuring a flawless execution of the construction process. By building away from the existing tracks, most of the construction can be completed during normal service hours, minimizing risks and allowing for a more flexible and efficient schedule. The MTR expects Hung Shui Kiu Station to open its doors in 2030.
