Mapim to deploy humanitarian mission to Nepal on Sept 5

Mapim, the Malaysian Consultative Council of Islamic Organisations, plans to send a humanitarian mission to Nepal on September 5 to aid victims of severe flash floods. Mapim president Mohd Azmi Abdul Hamid informed the public about this, after speaking with the Nepalese Embassy. The mission will begin with a team of four volunteers who will evaluate the needs of affected regions and arrange the necessary aid.

Mapim is also seeking help from other local NGOs, including MyCare, and two local Nepalese NGOs, to amplify the impact of their assistance. On August 26, flash floods caused by an avalanche in Nepal resulted in at least 469 deaths and over 1,400 people still missing, including about 540 foreigners. The incident sent a wave of rocks, ice, mud, and debris rushing through Himalayan mountain rivers, destroying villages and crucial infrastructure along a popular trekking route between Kathmandu and Lhasa in Tibet.

The Malaysian Foreign Ministry noted that 57 Malaysians were still missing as of August 27, based on information from relatives, friends, and employers. Mohd Azmi highlighted that medical supplies and food packs for victims are the main priorities for the mission. He added that the details of the special mission will be formally communicated to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in the near future.

Mohd Azmi expressed hope that the mission will demonstrate Malaysian solidarity and the collective will to support the disaster victims.
